My visa has been approved!

One quick sentence in an email and there it is. I received a ‘Hurrah!’ for those around me and that was it, back into work. To be honest, I don’t really know how to feel. I’m happy and excited but I’ve been waiting for so long that its more of a sense of relief. Finally its done. Now I can get excited instead of frustrated. It will be good to move forward.

Frustration.

Still no visa. My responses are getting less optimistic by the week.

Not really much to say but I have sent an email to my agent at the SACM in Canberra to plead with her to do something to get things moving again. It’s been 6 weeks now since the issue was raised about my visa number and I don’t think we’ve moved much further past that point yet. To say its frustrating is quite an understatement. I don’t like feeling helpless so its very annoying that there is little I can do but send emails asking what is going on every now and then. Unfortunately, I seem to get the same response, which is not encouraging.

I was contacted last weekend by Dr S, my new boss, to let me know that he was back from his holidays and had been told about my visa delay. He also gave me my very first work assignment, to help him get the lab ready for immunohistochemistry (what I’ll be doing). So without having ever stepped foot into the lab I have to let him know exactly what I need and preferably in a 12 month supply as it takes a long time to get orders into the country (good to know its not just me who can’t get in). Quite a challenge, but an exciting one!

So when are you leaving?

Same old response… don’t know yet.

I haven’t heard anything since Monday but I do know that my agent and the secretary at the dept have been conversing. Unfortunately there’s only an overlap of 3 days in the working week so what doesn’t get done on Monday to Wednesday is left to be dealt with the following week. Starting to relax into the unknown again a little, but I do hope they sort out this problem soon. It is rather worrying when my agent claims that she’s never had this happen before. Lucky me huh? This is why I don’t gamble.

On Sunday I finally caught up with T and had a good chat about Saudi Arabia, the people, the customs, what to pack. Was really great to speak with someone who had lived in Riyadh for years and could answer my questions and tell me a bit about how life will be like over there. She also bought me over an abaya so I will be able to cover up appropriately when I get off the plane. She told me that she grabbed a fairly plain one from a local shopping centre but I actually think that it is quite pretty.

Still waiting.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change…

I think this phrase is going to become my mantra from here on in.

The last 6 weeks have definitely been a lesson in patience. Firstly, waiting for appointments with doctors, lawyers and government agencies and the frustration of turning up to pick up documents from DFAT to find they aren’t ready yet. Next up was waiting for my chance to fly to Canberra to submit my visa application and then being put back in the waiting line by the KSA Embassy requesting me fill in another form.

I had to get myself to Canberra on Thursday July 9th to submit my visa application. Unfortunately, from the beginning of the week I had come down with a nasty virus that severely restricted the movement in my neck. This led to sleepless nights and a whole lot of pain. The one thing that did work in my favour was that I was already awake when I needed to get up early Thursday morning.
