So this is it. Today is that day that I have been anticipating with excitement and terror for the past 8 months. In just over 12 hours I fly out of Melbourne towards my new home in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

One of the great things I have noticed about knowing I’m going to be leaving Australia for a year is that I have finally gotten out and done a lot of things that I had always been putting off for another day. For example, an exhibition on Pompeii was on at the Melbourne Museum that I really wanted to see, so instead of just saying I’d like to see it, and saying and saying until it finally closed so I couldn’t go, I actually went and enjoyed it. But I didn’t stop there, while in the city we also decided to go to a restaurant I’d always wanted to go to.. and so on. For me, the general excuses like ‘I can’t afford it right now‘ or ‘maybe later‘ were easily overruled by ‘I’m leaving soon so just do it‘. Sure, most things will be here when I get back but now I can take those memories with me.
Take a change in seasons, an imminent departure to another country, half a house worth of possessions to pack away, a liberal serving of personal life disarray and stress, and what may have been a suspiciously ripe cheese sauce in the fridge. Mix vigorously and you have me, three kinds of sick.
With 18 days remaining, sometimes it feels like forever and others like its not enough. Since I’ve known for ages that I was eventually leaving I have slowly acquired all of the things I wish to take so I’m feeling pretty organised in that respect. Over the weekend I pulled out all of the clothes that I have decided to take and filled up my suitcase to see how much they weighed. I clocked in at a little under 15kg, which is encouraging, but unfortunately my suitcase accounts for 5 of those kilos, which is not so encouraging. After a quick look around I found it will cost me around $200 to reclaim about 2kg with a new, lighter suitcase. Hardly seems worth it when Emirates only charges $50/kg excess baggage. I think I’ll be hard pressed to come in over 30kg as it is.
My passport arrived at work today, visa intact. I handed my resignation letter to my manager with shaky hands. That’s it. I’m really leaving.
My last day will be October 30th then I’ll take another week to finalise my affairs before getting on a plane to Riyadh. My agent at the SACM is organising my plane ticket so I hope to receive that soon.
I’m a bit lost for things to write at the moment. The whole realisation is pretty overwhelming right now. It’s finally happening and come November I’ll be in Saudi Arabia.
