This week I decided to buy a tub of a ubiquitous item in stores over here, halawa. In fact, what made me more interested was that I had seen blocks of ‘halva’ (same thing, different language) in gourmet food stores back in Australia and had always wondered what it was for. So I picked up a small tub and took it home to try it out.

Firstly, what’s it made of? The ingredients list on the tub I bought state; Tahini, sugar, glucose, vanillin and pistachio (and some preservatives you don’t want to know about). Tahini is a paste made from sesame seeds and has a sweet nutty taste that melts in your mouth like butter. The texture is soft and crumbly. I bought the pistachio halawa, which meant it came coated in pistachios and you can’t go wrong with that. It also comes in plain, hazelnut, chocolate, strawberry and probably a bunch of other flavours depending on where you look.

I love trying new things so I thought I would start a weekly introduction to some of the interesting items I have found in the local supermarket. It gives me a good reason to keep buying those sweets I’ve been eyeing off and also lets you see the kind of food people over here like to eat.

Last week I was at the Female Cafeteria getting my lunch. A large group of nurses had entered before me and were waiting to be served. As these women were being served I noticed one nurse produce a plastic bag and requested that her salad be spooned into it so she could eat it later. Across the front of the bag was emblazoned the word “Biohazard”, a term that generally strikes fear into the hearts of those who are confronted by it. While I know that these bags are no different than any other before they have been used, the idea of putting a salad into a bag often reserved for blood and other bodily fluids is a little disturbing. I’m sure the salad was very tasty…
