I haven’t updated for a while because I have been busy and then got struck down for a week with the flu. I’ll endeavour to catch up with my recent goings on in the next few days.

Thursday March 4th was the annual Capsa (Arabian-themed party) at the US military compound. This was an opportunity for the boys to dress up in the thobe and shemagh/ghutra (male head scarf) like their Arabian counterparts and the women could wear some of the Arabian-styled dresses (sans veiling) that populate the souks here in Riyadh.

I have been told by a lot of expats here that new arrivals to this country often put on a few extra kilos due to the excessive amounts of fat and sugar in the meals here (think Macdonalds and Dunkin’ Donuts). Fortunately for me it seems that I have bucked the trend and have actually lost 3kg in the past 2 months. So the question is was it due to me having a strict diet and exercise program or was it just because I’m lazy and can’t be bothered making the effort to cook like I used to?

I’ve fallen a bit behind on my food updates. Sorry. I’ve been eating in too often!

This week I want to introduce you to a staple food in Saudi Arabia. The shawarma.

Chicken is the most prevalent meat used in shawarma but you can get beef and lamb varieties also in some places. I was told the first time I ate shawarma to ‘eat it, but don’t look inside’. However, curiousity got the better of me and I’ll fill you in on the ingredients.
